Tim Mispagel | Artist Statement

BALANCE is more a focus of mine now than ever. Balancing work and play amidst a rapidly changing world is a daily exercise. Like fibers in a rope, the facets of my life are interwoven with one another. Making art is, and always has been, the primary component that binds everything together. My roles as husband, father, teacher, colleague, coach and friend are elements that shape who I am and the art I make.

I choose to work in a variety of artistic media and tend to have several projects going at once. Often times, one project influences another and new ideas abound. Whether I’m developing a drawing, photograph, painting, print or a sculpture, the goal is to bring each piece into BALANCE. Notably, I’m committed to my art being more than just a personal narrative, but the reflection of a larger culture that surrounds me.

“In a decaying society, art, if it is truthful, must also reflect decay. And unless it wants to break faith with its social function, art must show the world as changeable and help to change it.” -Earnst Fischer
